Derby House (1 Derby Terrace)

House, now converted into flats, comprises end bay of terrace which forms a prominent feature at north entrance to The Park Estate. c1829-30. Probably by architect P. F. Robinson. Of particular interest as the Terrace is considered a model of the architectural style and scale of house building that Robinson had envisaged in his ‘Plan for Nottingham Park’ 1827 for the 4th Duke of Newcastle. Grade II Listed. Five storeys including attic and basement. Large four storey extension with pedimented gable c1870 added to side of original house adjacent to original entrance porch block. Various extensions or separate developments built at back of building in original garden area. Obtrusive steel fire escape platforms and staircase attached to rear of building. Original basement projection from base of building to Derby Road footway now removed. Stucco with slate roof. Rusticated ground floor (i.e. terrace level). First floor sill band. Moulded eaves cornice with plain band in shallow relief to main facades plus moulded cornice and blocking course to attic storey. Two rendered sidewall chimney stacks. Original pots replaced with red clay hooded pots and flue terminals. Windows mainly original glazing bar sashes. Street facade of original part of house has two segment arched windows and door at basement level; three windows to rusticated ground floor section; three tall windows with moulded surrounds and cornices to first floor with renewed steel balconettes; three windows with moulded surrounds at second floor level and three windows with plain reveals at attic level. Projecting corner extension block has similar window arrangements but with only one window on each floor. Original porch block on side of original house with entrance door flanked by pilasters. A number of original openings at rear, originally facing garden, now obscured by later extensions. A number of later window alterations or additions. Originally, probably cast iron railings across the front of the house at terrace level. Railings added at road level c1995-2000 to enclose forecourt area for car parking. Gate piers in rendered boundary wall on North Road.
