Rocky Mount : Derby Road

Detached house c1900-1905, currently vacant. Two storeys with basement. Located on steeply sloping site between Barrack Lane and Derby Road with basement storey exposed on main Derby Road front. Barrack Lane, previously named Barrack Road, formed main access to Army Barracks in The Park from Derby Road. Barracks, built 1793 demolished c1870, replaced by sections of new estate roads Pelham Crescent and Cavendish Crescent North. Site of house and other houses adjacent to Barrack Lane previously used as allotment gardens. Red brick with stone dressings plus hipped and gabled plain tile roof. Two storey rear wing with gabled roof. Coursed rubble stone retaining wall adjacent to Derby Road front plus two storey canted window bay with hipped roof. Three plain sashes to bay at each level, now partly boarded up. Above, pair of windows with glazing bar upper sashes and gable over. Decorative gable vent. To right of canted bay, doorway at basement level with hipped plain tile canopy on timber posts and brick plinth walls. Above, single sash window at each storey level. Stone surrounds to bay windows with stone lintels and sills to other windows, plus stone head and sill bands. Moulded brick string courses plus decorative terracotta panels to bay. Canopied main entrance on side elevation with a number of single sash window openings including glazing bar upper sashes and stone lintels and sills. Canopied entrance on rear facade facing Barrack Lane with segmental brick arched and stone dressed window openings on rear wing. Later door opening at first floor level on rear wing with staircase and railing. Hipped plain tile roof with decorative ridge tiles and bonnet hips. Bargeboard to front gable plus shaped brick brackets to eaves. Red brick side wall chimney stacks with corbelled head detail and stone coping. Some stacks now altered. Early 20c garage building added on Derby Road boundary replacing part of original stone boundary wall. Originally, path access to main entrance on side of house from gated opening in stone boundary wall on Derby Road. Boundary wall to Barrack Lane now demolished and replaced with temporary metal fence panels.
