173 Derby Road

One of pair of houses c1860 forming part of group of buildings on Derby Road known originally as Rock Terrace. Plot backs on to Barrack Lane previously named Barrack Road. Barrack Road formed main access to Army Barracks in The Park from Derby Road. Built c1793 and demolished c1870 the Barracks were replaced by new estate roads Pelham Crescent and Cavandish Crescent North. Two storeys plus attic and basements. Red brick, now rendered on Derby Road front. Originally, hipped slate roof, now replaced by tiles. Much altered. Lower part of building converted into shop adjacent to Derby Road with residential above. Original two storey red brick rear wing, now altered with original monopitched slate roof replaced by flat roof, plus single storey, flat roofed 20c extension. Original windows on rear elevation replaced and new window openings added. Majority of original openings on Derby Road front replaced with three storey canted window bay. Original brickwork facade details and features obliterated with later rendering. Part of brickwork facade above shop has been painted. Only surviving original brickwork detail of note is shaped brick dentillation with string course at gutter level on rear facade. Red brick side wall and ridge chimney stacks altered or partially rebuilt. Roof windows added. Original rainwater fittings replaced and further pipework added. Small rear yard area adjacent to Barrack Lane with section of original brick boundary wall adjacent to Rocky Mount. Rebuilt boundary wall to Barrack Lane.
