171 Derby Road

One of pair of houses c1860 forming part of group of buildings on Derby Road known originally as Rock Terrace. Plot backs on to Barrack Lane previously named Barrack Road. Barrack Road formed main access to Army Barracks in The Park from Derby Road. Built c1793 and demolished c1870 the Barracks were replaced by new estate roads Pelham Crescent and Cavandish Crescent North. Two storeys plus attic and basements. Red brick, now rendered on Derby Road front and side elevation. Originally, hipped slate roof, now replaced by tiles. Much altered. Lower part of building converted into shop adjacent to Derby Road with residential above. Original two storey red brick rear wing, now partly rendered, with monopitch slate roof. Double pitched 20c brick extension to rear wing in former yard area adjacent to Barrack Lane. Original windows on rear elevation replaced and new window openings added. Original glazing bar sash window opening with segmental arched head on side elevation with later smaller window opening below. Original brickwork and details on side elevation now obliterated by later rendering. Majority of original openings on Derby Road front replaced with three storey canted window bay. Original brickwork facade details and features obliterated with later rendering. Part of brickwork facade above shop has been painted. Only surviving original brickwork detail of note is shaped brick dentillation with string course at gutter level on rear facade. Red brick side wall and ridge chimney stacks altered or partially rebuilt. Roof windows added. Original rainwater fittings replaced and further pipework added. Original brick walls enclosing rear yard area replaced by 20c extension and other alterations.
