119 Derby Road

One of a pair of houses (with No.121) similar to adjacent pair at 123 and 125. One of the earliest group of houses in The Park c1828-30, possibly by architect P.F. Robinson. House, boundary wall (Derby Road), gate piers and attached wrought iron railings are Grade II Listed. Regency Classical Revival style. In single household use. Two storeys and garret above Derby Road level plus habitable basement at lower ground level with direct access onto rear terrace. Part of basement extends under paved forecourt to main entrance. External steps to basement via lightwell from forecourt. Vaulted brick cellar extends from basement to under Derby Road pavement (formerly known as Clinton Terrace). Painted stucco facades with, originally, dentillated eaves and pediment to gable plus blocking course. Dentillation missing at eaves on garden facing facade and part of gable pediment has been removed. Moulded architraves to window openings. Stucco lined out to imitate masonry joints. Two storey, flat roofed square entrance porch with panelled double door flanked by pilasters. Later lean-to extension adjacent to porch. Gabled roof with slates and pair of central chimney stacks. Original cornice detail on one stack has been partially lost. Chimney pots missing. Original rainwater fittings replaced. Original double hung sash windows with glazing bars, some alterations. Garret window added adjacent to original in gable. Paved forecourt at Derby Road level. Steeply sloping terraced garden. Private upper terrace to garden with access from basement. Substantial original stone retaining wall with steps from upper garden level to lower garden terrace adjacent to Newcastle Drive (previously named Pelham Terrace). Originally, lower garden terraces of Nos. 119 and 121 were shared, with single stepped access leading to Pelham Terrace (Newcastle Drive).
