1 South Road

Detached house c1856-59 architect T.C. Hine. House and attached boundary wall Grade II Listed. Now converted into flats. Plan by H. Butler for garage building for James Curnow c1920. Also later extension and porch adjacent to Cavendish Crescent South. Outbuildings altered/rebuilt to form residential accommodation. Main house is two storeys plus basement and attics. Red brick with buff brick and ashlar dressings and hipped slate roof. Prominent three storey red brick square tower with main entrance porch at ground level, corner windows at second floor level and pyramidal roof. Two storey canted window bay overlooking garden with single storey angled corner window bay to left. Plinth plus decorative buff brick and stone bands at first floor and eaves including brick stretchers above and below alternating inset square panels. Also, stone bands and panels on tower. Moulded stone eaves cornice. Stone surrounds to a number of straight headed and semicircular arched windows with chamfered reveals to some openings. Elsewhere, a number of separate stone sills. Moulded stone surrounds to corner window openings on tower with round arched heads and colonnettes. Moulded stone surrounds to main entrance doorway at base of tower with fanlight. Slate hipped roof with lead flashings. Hipped slate roof to canted window bay and slate pyramidal roof to tower. Red brick chimney stacks with stone dressings. Alterations to upper part of stacks and original pots replaced. Original rainwater fittings replaced and further pipework added. Dormer window with pedimented roof. Roof windows added. Windows mainly glazing bar sashes with a number of alterations and additions. Prominent original red brick boundary wall with coursed rubble Bulwell stone plinth. Original gate piers on Cavendish Crescent South and South Road. Boundary wall details include square buff brick/stone panels plus blue brick plinth and string courses. Stepped blue brick copings. Red brick gate piers with buff brick/stone panels, stone plinths and shaped caps. Later gate opening added and part of boundary wall removed during later addition of garage building.
