17 Pelham Crescent

One of a group of houses in pairs c1871 by John Loverseed. Layout plan of The Park by Hine & Evans 1855-56 anticipated a sweeping crescent linking North Road to Lenton Avenue. However, continued use of Barracks in area until c1870 resulted in Pelham Crescent becoming a cul-de-sac. Original house known as Holmlea. Now converted into flats. Two storeys plus attic and basement. Red brick facades with blue brick ornamentation and stone dressings. Slate, gabled roof. Originally, single storey rear extension with hipped slate roof plus separate outbuildings adjacent to Pelham Crescent. Outbuildings now replaced with 20c garage building. Also 20c lean to conservatory on side elevation. Two storey, flat roofed canted window bay with gable above, and single storey flat roofed rectangular window bay on garden front. Gabled side elevation with two storey flat roofed rectangular entrance bay. Railings added to roof of rectangular bay. Two storey road front facade. A number of pointed brick arched window openings, some blind, at first floor and attic levels. Ornamental brickwork features include dentilation at gable verges, moulded gable kneelers and extensive blue brick decorative banding and patterning on each facade. Brick and stone round arched head to main entrance doorway. Stonework details include moulded bay cornices, lintels and sills, keystones to pointed brick arched openings, eight pointed star vents plus copings. Moulded stone surround to main entrance doorway, including side shafts with floriated capitals. Shaft mullioned stone surround to rectangular bay on garden front. Double pitched slate roof with gables. Clay ridge tiles. Brick gabled dormer windows. Original brick chimney stacks with seperated flues, blue brick string courses, corbelled caps and buff ‘crown’ chimney pots. Original rainwater fittings replaced and further pipework added. Mainly single glazing bar sash windows with some alterations and replacements. A number of alterations and additions to openings. Original garden area adjacent to Pelham Crescent now converted for car access and parking with later enlarged openings within original brick and stone boundary wall. Garden area on main front originally used communally with No.15 Pelham Crescent with gated access from Cavendish Crescent North. Gardens now divided for separate use. Original brick garden wall adjacent to Cavendish Crescent North with coursed rubble stone plinth.
