16 Pelham Crescent

One of a pair of houses c1870-75 possibly by John Loverseed. Layout of The Park Estate, by Hine & Evans 1855-56, anticipated a sweeping crescent linking North Road with Lenton Avenue. However continued use of Army Barracks in area until c1870 resulted in Pelham Crescent becoming a cul-de-sac. In single household use. Red brick with stone dressings and double pitched slate roof. Two storeys plus attic and basement. Prominent corner position at junction of Pelham Crescent and Barrack Lane. Two storey square entrance bay with hipped roof on main front facing Pelham Crescent. Entrance bay flanked by gabled wings with two storey canted window bay to right and two storey rectangular window bay to left. Canted bay forms one of a pair with No.14 Pelham Crescent. House built up to boundary on Barrack Lane with, originally, a small yard. Yard area now infilled with late 20c single storey extension. Also, late 20c single storey extension with monopitch roof added adjacent to main entrance. Brickwork features include moulded red brick dentillation detail at eaves and gable verges with blue brick string courses, decorative blue brick banding at various level on front facades, blue brick string courses and square inset panels on window bays plus polychromatic brickwork to semicircular and segmental arched heads to a number of door and window openings. Stonework details include cornices, copings, sills and shaped lintels to window bays plus gable kneelers and caps to chimney stacks. Double pitched slate roof with gables, gabled dormer and hip. Clay ridge and hip tiles. Red brick ridge stacks with blue brick details and corbelled heads. Buff ‘crown’ chimney pots. Original rainwater fittings replaced and further pipework added. Original plain and glazing bar sash windows generally, plus a number of later door and window additions. Original brick/stone boundary wall enclosing garden on Pelham Crescent and Barrack Lane now partly altered and rendered. Garage added at bottom of garden replacing part of original boundary wall. Red brick gate piers on Pelham Crescent adjacent to main entrance rebuilt.
