21 Park Valley
One of the first group of houses to be built in the ‘Bowl’ of The Park c1845-50. Probably by T.C. Hine architect. Later in 1854 Hine was appointed by the 5th Duke of Newcastle as Surveyor to the Newcastle Estate with particular responsibility for The Park. By 1855-56, with assistant Robert Evans, Hine had prepared a modified layout of The Park which survives more or less intact to this day. One of a pair of semi-detached houses (with No.23). Grade II Listed. In single household use. Three storeys plus attic. A number of later alterations including main entrance porch / vestibule bay with dummy gablets, two storey rectangular bay addition to Park Valley facade plus flat roofed side extension. Regency style stucco facades with plain band course at ground floor storey height level on garden front, surmounted by plain pilasters with capitals plus plain band in shallow relief and moulded cornice at roof level with parapets. Stucco has been painted on front facade. Moulded architraves to original window openings on garden facing facade with projecting sills on block brackets. Varied details to openings on later extensions including moulded surrounds and chamfered reveals. Main entrance doorway combining fluted pilasters and capitals with cushioned frieze and triangular pediment. Banded rustications to stucco at garden storey level. Saddleback slate roof with rooflights and lead lined gutters behind low parapets. Stuccoed gable flanked by chimney stacks with moulded caps and a number of replaced or missing chimney pots. Original sash windows generally. Some additions and alterations to doors and windows. Roof window added. Plinth and stone balustrading, (also Grade II Listed), to Park Valley boundary. Garage building added at bottom of garden facing Huntingdon Drive. Original garden area terraced to suit sloping ground.
