9 Park Valley
One of the earlier houses in The Park c1845-50, possibly by architect T.C. Hine. Hine later appointed by 5th Duke of Newcastle as Surveyor of Newcastle Estate. By 1855-56 Hine had prepared modified road layout of The Park Estate, which very closely resembles the plan today. Regency style villa with painted stucco facades. Now altered and extended. In single household use. Reputed to have been the home of John Player c1850-1895. (Players Tobacco Company). Lower part of large terraced original garden area, adjacent to Huntingdon Drive, converted for separate residential use. Plan for alterations to stables for R. Wing c1928. Four storeys including basement/cellars. Building considerably enlarged including three storey extension facing Park Valley and two storey flat roofed side extension abutting north facing facade of original house c1890. In addition, pair of canted window bays added c1870 overlooking the garden. Plain, painted stucco facades with gablets, cornices and low parapets. Moulded window surrounds to original window openings with projecting moulded sills on plain block brackets. Moulded surrounds to later door and window openings with painted stone sills. Also, a number of windows with half round arched heads plus oculus windows. Pitched roofs with gablets. Originally slate roof coverings, now replaced on main roof. Original chimney stacks partially taken down and pots removed. Brick boundary wall to Park Valley with later gate piers and gates.
