6 Park Valley

One of the early houses in The Park c1835-45. Also known as Stuart Cottage. Now converted into two flats. Two storeys plus basement and cellars. Painted stucco facades with moulded door and window surrounds. Slate hipped roof. Early outbuilding at top of drive, adjacent to main entrance to house, now altered and extended. Later single storey 20c extension with slate pitched roof in rear yard area. Late 20c excavated access with new door and window opening to basement on garden front, undertaken during works to convert utility areas into habitable rooms. Original verandah access garden front removed, early/mid 20c, during conversion of sash window into French door/window. House is of simple rectangular plan form with, originally, single storey rear extension. Upper floor added to rear extension, early/mid 20c, with flat roof. Stucco facades with plinth plus plain band in shallow relief at eaves level. Stucco lined out in imitation of masonry. Moulded stone/stucco surrounds to a number of original door and window openings with cornices to heads of ground floor openings on garden front. Moulded brackets to some sills. Hipped slate roof with clay ridge and hip tiles. Projecting box gutter and rendered side wall chimney stacks. Stacks altered. Glazing bar sash windows to a number of original openings with some alterations, including replacement of tripartite sash window with French doors and sidelights on garden front. Panelled main entrance door at side of house with decorative glazing bar overlight, all within moulded surround. A number of later door and window openings. House nestles against large coursed rubble stone retaining wall with Standard Hill and the General Hospital at higher level above. Original brick boundary walls adjacent to gardens of Nos.4 and 8 Park Valley and coursed rubble stone retaining boundary wall with gate piers on Park Valley.
