4 Park Valley

One of the early houses in The Park c1835-45. Also known as Hollyhurst. Now converted into flats. Two storeys plus basement. Painted stucco facade with moulded door and window surrounds. Slate hipped roof. Similar to adjacent house at No.6 Park Valley. Simple rectangular plan form of house, originally with small outbuilding in rear yard area, now added to with a number of single and two storey rendered and painted side and rear extensions. Alterations by Harry Gill for C. Vickers c1919. Stucco facades to original house with plinth plus plain band in shallow relief at eaves level. Stucco may have been lined out originally in imitation of masonry. Moulded stone/stucco surrounds to a number of original door and window openings with cornices to heads of ground floor openings on garden front. Plain reveals to other openings including rear windows. Prominent pair of tripartite sash windows on garden front with pair of smaller single window openings above Hipped slate roof with clay ridge and hip tiles. Projecting box gutter and rendered side wall chimney stacks. Stack copings altered. Glazing bar sash windows to a number of original openings with some alterations and additions. House located at back end of plot close to large coursed rubble stone retaining wall with site of General Hospital and developed Standard Hill at higher level above. House retains original garden area enclosed by trees and shrubs, separated from adjacent access drive by balustraded retaining wall. Garden level slightly above Park Valley retained by coursed rubble stone boundary wall. Original brick garden wall adjacent to No.6 also survives.
