14 Park Terrace

Detached house c1828-30, probably by architect P.F. Robinson, with substantial early additions. Now converted into a number of separate dwellings. Robinson’s services were obtained by the 4th Duke of Newcastle in 1825 and shortly afterwards in 1827 Robinson published one of the earliest plans for a residential layout in The Park. Although the plan was never implemented, Robinson was responsible for a number of buildings on Park Terrace, Park Valley and Derby Road. Two and three storeys with basement and attic. Plinth, stucco facades and gabled plain tile roof. Later two storey, flat roofed brick side extension added adjacent to Park Terrace c1970-80. Main entrance gateway on Park Terrace with panelled red brick piers and moulded stone dressings and copings. Gateway leads via canopied path to Tudor arched main entrance doorway. Above, projecting decorated bargeboards to one of three gables on entrance front. Pair of gabled wings on garden front flanking recessed central section. Single and two storey canted window bays with hipped roofs on entrance front. Moulded surrounds to a number of door and window openings. Also, openings with splay reveals, moulded labels, sills, sill bands and string courses. To right of main entrance bay, two storey flat roofed part of the building with moulded cornices, copings and blocking course. Asymmetrical arrangement of mainly gabled plain tile roofs with flat roofed sections. Mainly plain coped gables with kneelers. Combination of ridge and side wall chimney stacks, now altered. Some replacement of original rainwater fittings with further pipework added. Mainly casement windows, including a number with mullions and transoms, plus alterations and additions. Building located on steeply sloping site with garden terraces down to Park Valley. Apart from brick and stone gate piers original boundary wall adjacent to Park Terrace has been removed. Coursed rubble stone wall encloses lower garden area adjacent to Park Valley.
