8 North Road
One of a group of houses built in pairs c1870 by John Loverseed. Layout plan of The Park by Hine & Evans 1855-56 anticipated a sweeping crescent linking North Road to Lenton Avenue. However, continued use of existing Barracks in the area until c1870 resulted in Pelham Crescent becoming a cul-de-sac. House now converted into flats. Two storeys plus attic and basement with original single storey rear extensions. Originally, coalhouse and other outbuildings adjacent to Pelham Crescent. Red brick with blue brick ornamentation and stone dressings. Double pitched roof with gables. Two storey canted window bay on garden front with hipped slate roof. Gable above with semicircular arch headed window. To the left, single storey rectangular window bay with hipped slate roof. Above, pair of semicircular arch headed windows and above again 20c window opening to attic at gutter level. Two storey, hipped roof main entrance bay on side elevation with adjacent gabled wing. Single window openings on side elevation, some with semicircular arched heads. Single window openings on rear elevation with some alterations. Ornamental brickwork features include moulded brick gable verges, blue brick decorative facade banding and string courses plus alternating red and blue brick voussoirs to a number of door and window heads. Stonework details include main entrance door surround, sills and shaped lintels to a number of window openings plus keystones and gable kneelers. Glazing bar sash windows generally. Some alterations and additions to door and window openings. Double pitched roof with gables. Original slate roof covering now replaced with tiles. Red brick chimney stacks with plinths and corbelled red and blue brick heads. Buff, louvred chimney pots. Prominent red brick boundary walls enclosing house with coursed rubble stone plinths on Pelham Crescent, North Road and Cavendish Crescent North. Original gated openings with piers and stone caps on Pelham Crescent and North Road.
