7 North Road
Large detached house built c1872 for George Sparrow. Monogrammed datestone panel mounted on brick pediment over main entrance bay. House also known as ‘Claremont’. Now converted into flats. House located on island site surrounded by estate roads. Two storeys plus attics and basement. Red brick with stone dressings and slate, hipped and mansard roofs. A number of alterations and additions including slate mansard roof with gabled brick bay replacing part of original hipped main roof plus three storey extension with mansard roof, two storey flat roofed wing and later two storey extension with mansard roof adjacent to Clumber Crescent North boundary. Also single storey flat roof extensions to south facing facade plus conversion of original coach house with glasshouse and yard into separate dwelling c1990 at junction of Clumber Crescent North and Tunnel Road. Imposing main entrance bay on North Road front with stone faced portico and canted window bay above with brick pediment over. Small single storey, flat roofed and stone faced later extension to left side of portico. Two storey canted window bay on garden front with later alterations and additions at roof level. To left, single storey canted conservatory bay with balustrading. Pair of two storey rectangular window bays on south facing facade with slate hipped roofs. Stonework features also include moulded eaves cornice, string and band courses, door and window surrounds and gable copings. Slate hipped roof with later alterations and additions. Lead flashings to ridges and hips. Red brick chimney stacks with ‘separated’ flues, stone plinth course, string course and moulded stone caps. A number of stacks now altered. Buff crown pots. Original rainwater fittings replaced and further pipework added. Combination of plain and glazing bar sash windows with alterations and additions. Panelled main entrance door with round arched overlight. Prominent red brick boundary wall with coursed rubble stone plinth encircles house. Ashlar piers to gated openings on North Road with later metal gates.
