Yorke House: 6 North Road
Large prominent corner house c1870-1880, now converted and extended to accommodate nine household units. Red brick walls plain in character with brick string courses incorporating sawtooth detailing at storey levels. Brick corbelled eaves with modillion or block cornice detailing. Prominent brick gables and gabled dormers with brick raking cornice detail at gable verges. Single storey flat roofed canted window bay to garden facade and two storey canted bay adjacent to main entrance doorway. Tall, partially rebuilt brick chimney stacks with stone dressings plus brick string courses and corbelled caps. Gabled and hipped slate roof, much rebuilt to provide attic accommodation c1995-2000. Plain and moulded stone door and window surrounds, sills and lintels generally, now painted, including prominent arched main entrance doorway with segmental pediment. Predominantly vertical sliding sash windows, some original but many replaced and alternative types added including casements. An unsightly proliferation of recently added roof windows of varying sizes. All original rainwater fittings have been replaced and further downpipes added. Part of the conversion works to the building into separate households c1995-2000 included the construction of large two and three storey extensions abutting the original house adjacent to Cavendish Crescent North. This over intensive development has significantly distorted the character and setting of the original house by infilling the important open space between the house and the adjacent road and by compromising views of the house from Cavendish Crescent North. Part of the original garden area has been converted into car parking with a new vehicular opening on North Road. The brick / stone boundary walls have been rebuilt adjacent to North Road and Clumber Crescent North and the original stone / brick boundary wall on Cavendish Crescent North has been rebuilt as part of the recent extensions to the original building. The original brick / stone garden boundary wall adjacent to 19 Cavendish Crescent North survives.
