Adam House: Clumber Road East
Large detached house 1885, by architect Arthur Marshall for Samuel Bourne, photographer. Formerly known as ‘Brightlands’. Two storeys plus basement and attic storey. Red brick with timber framework and tile hanging at attic level, ashlar dressings and hipped and gabled plain tile roof. Alterations, additions and later extensions include three storey flat roofed red brick extension to north facade, flat roofed glazed pavilion with balcony between bays on garden front, conversion and enlargement of former carriage house at bottom of garden adjacent to Cavendish Road East into garages plus flat roofed double garage building adjacent to house on main road front. Three storey gabled main entrance bay on road front, three storey gabled wing and two storey canted window bay on south facade plus pair of single storey flat roofed rectangular and polygonal window bays on garden front. Decorative brick pilasters to side gable plus banding and string courses at storey height level. Also, moulded brick sills generally plus shaped brick lintels and sill aprons to canted window bays. Some areas of brickwork, mainly to original outbuildings, now rendered and painted. Timber framework at attic level with plain, shaped and moulded posts, sills and brackets plus white painted plaster infill panels. Stonework features include plain and moulded lintels, complete window surrounds to bays on garden front plus moulded surround to main entrance doorway. Irregular roof form with plain tiled hips, gables, gabled dormers and dormer windows. Decorative ridge tiles and iron finials. Overhanging bargeboards to gables and dormers. Tall red brick chimney stacks with brick relief patterning, moulded brick cornices and copings plus stone dressings. Red clay roll top chimney pots. Flat roofed dormer window added. Casement windows generally, many with glazing bars and leaded lights. Some alterations and additions to doors and windows. Altered red brick boundary wall with railings on main road front with enlarged opening for car access. Original coursed rubble stone boundary wall plinth on Cavendish Road East with red brick garden wall with saddleback copings above.
